Q. Why use Real wood instead of plywood
A. Mahogany is the most music friendly material on the planet. Because of the way it resonates and the frequency's it will resonate at.This is why its s good choice for musical instruments. And your speaker cabinet is a musical instrument. Your not just reproducing recorded music. You are trying to get the most out of your fingers, string's, guitar, effects, amp and cabinet. You want that baby to sing.
Birch ply is known for its low resonance. This makes it a good choice for baffle boards. What would you think of a guitar made of birch ply? See what I mean.
Q. Your cabs look beautiful but do they sound as good as they look?
A. Yes, better. The fact that the cabs look fantastic is secondary to our purpose. If we discovered that rhubarb had the best tone characteristics than that is what we would use.
Q. If I scratch it will I cry?
A. Probably. However Nitro cellulose Lacquer is one of the easiest finishes to touch-up/repair. In fact most automotive products ( T-Cut, White Spirit) are compatible with NTC. The grade of NTC we use is some of the toughest available. Designed for bar-tops and industrial (Restaurant) furniture. Also you need to put it perspective. Torn vynil looks ugly and is just doesn't repair well. The obvious answer is to put your cab in a flight case. Our cabs are available with heavy duty handmade vynil covers. Made by my loving wife Linda. But if you really want to protect any bit of gear, be it mahogany or vynil covered than you need to put it in a flight case.
Our friends at Flightcase Warehouse have all the Mongotone dimensions and details and can supply a world class flightcase for your beautiful new cab. Just click here to get to there Mongotone page.
Q. Is there a functional purpose to the elliptical cut-out on the back panels.
A. Yes the back panel is a very important factor to the cabinets tone, ambience and projection. Most open back cabs are just that. Wide open. Maybe a couple of pieces of very thin board lashed across the back. Used more for diagonal bracing than for tone. This wide open cab will result in Phase cancellation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_cancellation ) the sound from the rear of the cab and the front will meet and result in thinning out the sound of your amp. You may not notice it as much in a quiet room when you are the only one playing. But you may wonder where your tone has gone when the band kicks in. I cut the rear panels to allow for the big warm ambient effect that we want from an open back cab but not so much that phase cancellation can occur. The result is your amp sounds bigger fuller and will retain its character when the band is rock'n.
Q. Do you do custom dimensions?
A. Yes. Its not a problem and normally doesn't cost anymore than a standard cab.
Q. If mahogany cabs are so great sounding then why aren't all the big amp manufacturers making them.
A. Don't tell my wife but its because there isn't a lot of money in it. Amp manufacturers make their profit from buying cheap components and having them assembled in China, Mexico, etc.. They don't make much profit on there cabs. Even there poorly made MDF cabs. But they have to supply them. |
